Case Study:
Missing all teeth
I have no teeth or about to lose the rest of my teeth
It is very unfortunate when people are losing their teeth. However, dentistry as it is today can provide you with implant-supported replacements that in many instances feel and function like your own teeth.
Today’s standard of care for people who have no teeth in the lower jaw is a complete denture with retention provided by two implants (McGill consensus 2002).
If you are missing all teeth in one or both jaws your options to replace them are:
- Implant-supported complete fixed bridges replacing all the teeth in the arch
- Implant-retained complete removable over-denture utilizing attachments which are secured either directly to the implants or to a bar
- Conventional removable denture
The dental implants are always an excellent choice. Finding the predictable way of securing removable complete dentures particularly for the lower jaw was the driving force behind invention and development of the contemporary dental implantology.
The only two reasons to consider conventional complete denture are:
- When you psychologically or due to pre-existing medical condition not ready to go through additional surgical procedures that may be required to increase bone volume to host implants
- It is too expensive for you
